We interviewed Florian Bayer, an illustrator in the United Kingdom.

Q: What is your history with art?
A: I am a freelance illustrator. I studied Illustration in Wuerzburg and Berlin, Germany and now have my studio in Brighton, UK.
Q: What type of mediums do you work with?
A: I tried a lot of things but at the moment the essentials are: paper, brush, ink, pencil, PS3.
Q: What movement do you associate your art with, if any?
A: That’s an interesting question but hard to answer. Often I think there is a link between my work and Expressionism and sometimes Surrealism.
Q: Were you influenced by any other artists? If so, who?
A: For my lines and drawings the Wiener Secession and some of the Impressionists are the most important influences, for example: Schiele, Klimt, Lautrec. And then we all have our current artists all around us. The influence of my mates from Shake Your Tree Magazine, Sebastian Haslauer and Manuel Buerger is the one I love the most.
Q: What do you think are your best works?
A: It’s not really possible to say that about your own work… Perhaps it is “Selbsthaendig”, my book which will be published in September this year. It is about how to start your business as an illustrator and it is my very own work, because I did everything myself - the travelling and meeting people, the writing, the graphics, the illustrations…That was a great experience.
Q: What are some of your favorite music artists?
A: I saw Four Tet at the Loop Festival in Brighton yesterday and I really enjoyed his performance.
Q: What other hobbies/professions do you have besides art?
A: Hiking - I love nature.

Some photographs I took of Battles at Lollapalooza:

I was more impressed with Battles than any other music artist that we watched. They really stole the show.
Listen to Battles.

Garden, Kendra Binney
Kendra Binney describes her artwork as expressing nostalgia and contempt. She is from a small mountain town and spent most of her childhood exploring the minuscule world of “all things hiding in the grass.” She now lives in Portland, Oregon.
